A simple guide for everyday life

Traffic Light Framework

Notice what has changed. Respond with care. Connect to the right help.

When someone close to us goes quiet, we may rush to give advice. This guide helps us pause and choose a safer first step. It is for family, friends, neighbours and colleagues.

Want to see what you learn?

Answer the before survey first. Then read the colour guide below and answer the after survey. Both use the same seven easy questions.

1 · Answer before

The three colours

Check the colour before you react.

GREEN · Keep connected

Things seem as usual. Stay connected, ask how they are and keep listening.

YELLOW · Check in gently

You notice a change, such as someone withdrawing. Speak privately: ‘Are you okay? I’m here to listen.’ Give them space to talk and offer help.

RED · Put safety first

If someone says they may hurt themselves or there is immediate danger, stay with them and get urgent help. In Malaysia, call 999 for an emergency.

The colours describe a situation, not a person or a medical diagnosis. A situation can change. When you are unsure about safety, seek help.
